Can I change my mobile phone to prepaid and keep the number?

I am in Australia and am getting horrible monthly mobile phone bills. To keep things in control I want to go prepaid however I want to keep my phone number. Is this possible? Do I need a new handset?|||Yes u can do it,no need to buy new phone
